Bobby McFerrin: Spirityouall

Is this guy a genial jazz man or just a regular pop hit maker? Bobby McFerrin releases a new record Spirityouall paying tribute to his roots.

Bobby McFerrin: Spirityouall
Formate: Audio CD
Released: 2013
Label: Sony Masterworks

May you think whatever about Bobby McFerrin, there is one thing you cannot deny: aside from Al Jarreau or Jon Hendricks, his voice is one of the most charismatic ones jazz style has produced in the past fifty years. Moreover, everybody must worship the person Metropolitan Opera Company chooses. The old gospel and spiritual songs have come alive again and Bobby McFerrin proofs his very old songbook has kept its timeless character. And of course, there is a perfect band that helps a lot, including exotic and unusual instruments. Magic guitar accompaniments are colourful, vocal choirs explode to the impossible tone pitch, steel guitar or Hawaiian rhythms proof what a forgotten fortune has this jazz legend explored in the thirteen songs. Fix Me Jesus is certainly one of the best tracks of the whole album where the old good Mississippi bursts its banks by catchy falsetto or slide technique. Cheerful syncopes and sad melodies, spirituals as well as melancholic ballads, celebration of his own father & Deep River from 1957 are really well done.  McFerrin simply sticks to his believe that music is here to heal. And he kept his promise to the last bar.
