Emily Barker is certainly a very talented songwriter whose pieces are full of melodies and nice harmonical harmonies. Her approach is much more similar to Neil Young than to a kitsch folk and the music she creates is very specific. There are rich texts, perfect mixture of music instruments full of accordion, acoustic and electric guitars as well as the violin and a sweet velvet vocal on the album. No doubt the folk fans will appreciate this – but so will the rock matadors who worship a strong story supported by music. Atmospheric instrumentations are not boring at all, lyric-epic texts about one´s identity and personal comparison are as smooth as the river Emily sings so warmly about. The Australian popular culture meets giant American wildland here, melodic pirouettes dance over a middle rhythm that would be of no shame to Mumford & Sons or The Levellers. Simply, you feel a great respect to some tracks where the modern folk meets rural creativity and experienced music performance.
