Moderat: III

The concept of super band belongs more to the field of rock rather than electronic music. Yet, there are exceptions. One of them is the German project Moderat, in which producer Sascha Ring (aka Apparat) met with the duo known as Modeselektor – Sebastian Szary and Gernot Bronsert. They have released a number of singles and LPs under the prestigious labels BPitch and Monkeytown, called simply I, II and III. The third album will be introduced in June in Palác Lucerna, Prague.

The equation of the joint project title (Modeselektor + Apparat = Moderat) at the same time quite aptly illustrates how the invention of German playthings pressed into the sound of their songs. You can not simply say that someone should have upper hand. While Apparat largely leans to electronic songwriting, Modeselektor revel in less encompassing compositions and move to more experimental positions. Compared to the previous album, the chemistry of III has somehow slackened. Ring´s vocals are often lost in rich textures, vainly seeking a way to song-hits like Rusty Nails or Bad Kingdom. Instrumentally it is the most elaborate album of Moderat project. At the same time it is somehow froth. In case of album III, we must conclude that less is sometimes more.
