Anohni: Hopelessness

Anohni is a new pseudonym of singer and composer, formerly known as Antony Hegarty, the leader of the band Antony and the Johnsons. In addition to changing the art name, Anohni has undergone her own gender transformation (by the way, she became the second transgender person to be nominated for Grammy) and her first musical project under a new identity is album Hopelessness. Hopefully, not the last – her debut album is in fact one of the biggest musical events of the year, and not only within electronic music.

Flirtations with contemporary electronic music accompanied Anohni since the days of Antony and the Johnsons – inviting two of the most original and influential electronic producers to Hopelessness was only a logical result. Beat demiurg Hudson Mohawke, known for his cooperation with Kanye West, and experimental tempter Oneothrix Point Never are largely responsible for the bombastic and epic sound of the album – but it´s Anohni´s high-pitched voice and message she addresses that makes the album so exceptional. Hopelessness is an album of protestsongs 2.0 – Anohni sings about the most pressing problems of the today´s world marked by war and environmental catastrophes. Unadorned, yet wonderfully. Despite its name, Hopelessness is an album with the potential to change the world. In the best sense.
